The City of Denver’s Climate Action, Sustainability & Resiliency Office (CASR) recognized Centro San Juan Diego with an Energize Denver Award in 2022. “These awards celebrate Denver-based buildings that took sustainability measures to drive down their greenhouse gas impact, including energy efficiency, electrification, and water conservation,” says the CASR press release announcing the winners.
Centro San Juan Diego won the second-place prize in the Equitable Community Impact category for excellence in efficiency and equity following its collaboration with Energy Outreach Colorado’s Nonprofit Energy Efficiency Program (NEEP) in 2021-2022. After an initial building assessment, the NEEP team identified four specific needs in the Centro San Juan Diego facility including LED lighting, attic and pipe insulation, window weatherstripping, and rooftop unit upgrades. Over the course of about six months, NEEP’s contractors installed LED lighting throughout the building, completely insulated the 8,000-square-foot attic and basement piping and replaced two of the building’s 13 rooftop HVAC units with high efficiency models.
Through the Energize Denver awards, the city strives to bring greater awareness to buildings that prioritize vulnerable communities through their service and outreach. “Each year, Denver recognizes buildings that demonstrate excellence not only in energy efficiency and electrification, but also in community leadership and equity,” says the Colorado Real Estate Journal, which also recognized the award winners in early January 2023.
